Spanish photographer Alejandra Carles-Tolra was fascinated by the ROTC programs she saw at Boston-area schools. She found the program and its participants interesting and hoped to showcase how the students still have an individuality about them that isn’t automatically subjugated by the military collective.

For one week, photographer Oriol Segon Torra documented boys, ages 10 to 14, as they attended a military summer camp in Mogyoród, Hungary. The military lifestyle fascinates some. Others get dropped off by their parents, many of whom are Hungarian nationalists, so they can learn about the harsh realities of adult life.

Stacy Pearsall began bringing her camera to medical appointments so she could photograph veterans in waiting rooms. Her photographs grew into the Veterans Portrait Project, an ongoing photo series that brings Pearsall across the country, averaging three to four cities in a week.
