Right before photographer Theron Humphrey started a 50-state photo-project road trip, he made a stop in a Marietta, Georgia, animal shelter and adopted a puppy, Maddie. She accompanied him across 65,000 miles, quickly becoming what Humphrey describes as his best friend.

Documenting birds, amphibians and reptiles lost to history, his ongoing project questions the role of humans as the rate of extinction continues.

Photographer Viviana Peretti recently completed a series on animals in captivity at the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium. She visited the exhibits at least twice a week for three months starting in January. Before this project, she had never stepped foot in a zoo. She was always opposed to the idea.
