Robin Lim became a midwife after her sister died from complications during pregnancy. Since 2003, she and her team in Indonesia have helped thousands of low-income women have a healthy pregnancy and birth.
Lim was named CNN’s Hero of the Year on Sunday, December 11. She was among the top 10 Heroes who were honored during "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," hosted by Anderson Cooper.
Getty photographer Palani Mohan was sent to Bali on assignment for CNN to photograph Lim. “This is my fifth year that I’ve been working on this project for CNN, and I cannot think of a more worthy candidate than Robin,” Mohan said.
Locals fondly call Lim “Ibu Robin,” meaning “mother Robin.”
“She is a mother for not only for her family, but she’s a mother for hundreds of people, hundreds of women and babies in this part of Indonesia,” Mohan said.
For Mohan, photographing Lim was a challenge because she was constantly on the move. “The thing with Ibu is that she’s impossible to keep still in one place for more than a few seconds,” he said.
Mohan said that photographing Lim was a remarkable experience, especially when he was with her when she gave birth to a baby girl.
All of the Heroes were nominated by CNN viewers for their hard work and commitment. The Hero of the Year was chosen by the public in an online vote. Fans can still make a direct donation to their favorite Hero by using Google Wallet. Google is waiving all transaction fees to make sure 100% of the donations go directly to the Heroes' nonprofit organizations.
